The International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) is a non-profit organization created in June 1999 to establish a functional international framework for trading greenhouse gas emission reductions. Our membership includes leading international companies from across the carbon trading cycle. IETA members seek to develop an emissions trading regime that results in real and verifiable greenhouse gas emission reductions while balancing economic efficiency with environmental integrity and social equity.

Vision
IETA is dedicated to ensuring that the objectives of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change and ultimately climate protection are met through the establishment of effective systems for trading in greenhouse gas emissions by businesses, in an economically efficient manner while maintaining societal equity and environmental integrity.

Mission
Be an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to the development and establishment of effective market-based trading systems for greenhouse gas emissions by businesses that are demonstrably fair, open, efficient, accountable and consistent across national bounaries.

Goals & Objectives
IETA will work for:
the development of an active, global greenhouse gas market, consistent across national boundaries and involving all three flexibility mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol: the Clean Development Mechanism, Joint Implementation and emissions trading, the creation of systems and instruments that will ensure effective business participation. To achieve these goals, the objectives for the organization are:

1. Act as the leading voice for the business community on emissions trading to: promote an integrated view of the ET system as a solution to CC; and participate in the design and implementation of national and international rules and guidelines.
2. Provide the most up-to-date and credible source of information on emissions trading and greenhouse gas market activity.

Association

Since its inception in June of 1999, IETA has gained respect among the Emissions Trading community as an association of members dedicated to the establishment of effective systems for trading in greenhouse gas emissions by businesses.
In order to achieve this goal, IETA has initiated effective knowledge sharing with planned steps towards real contributions to market efficiency through its workshops and participation in events.
As the association evolves, we anticipate a continued growth in the participation of our workshops and increase in effective knowledge sharing.

IETA Workshops

IETA workshops result in the establishment of working groups focused on key elements of Emissions Trading Systems. The workshops provide an excellent opportunity for informal knowledge sharing, formulation of partnerships among businesses and over-all networking among individuals of similar interest. Good food, good people and interesting topics of discussion often result in a well focused and energised effort directed at real contributions not just planning for the next meeting.

Information on conferences/events with participation of the IETA Secretariat or IETA Members Our events were extremely well attended and well accepted by the participants. Discussions were stimulating and it is safe to say that we captured the overall feeling of the negotiations in our side events - as the positive approach of negotiators, NGO's and the business community all have contributed to arguably the most successful set of negotiations to date for the viability of the Kyoto Protocol.
